The people of this region are mainly involved in agriculture and its allied
activities. The industrial set up in district has history back to its rulers.
Maharaja Jagatjit Singh had devoted particular attention to promote Industrial
development. The Maharaja had set up various industrial units including Sugar
Mills at Phagwara, Hamira, Chemical, Steel and Leather Factories at various
parts of State. One of the biggest Distilleries in India was setup at Hamira
during his regime.
Phagwara is more industrially developed now Rail Coach factory is in Kapurthala
town. Rail Coach Factory, the second Coach Factory owned by Indian Railways and
third in the country was set up in 1986 at Kapurthala
Kapurthala is very famous for its Rice Thrashing Mills/Rice Shellars Industry.
It has about 80 rice shellars in District. It is largest number of rice shellars
in any district.
The District is an agricultural market and also has Agriculture tools
manufacturing units, Tanneries, Chemical, Paints, Liquor & Milk Plants and other
small scale units.
Sugar Mills at Phagwara, Liquor & Milk Plant at Hamira village, Markfed's Oil
Plant at Kapurthala City, All the tools used in the agriculture field by the
farmers is manufactured by the people of Phagwara. Rubber/Plastic Industries are
present in the Kapurthala as well as at Phagwara regions. Kapurthala region has
a unit for tanneries and artificial soles.
Many people are involved in making gur, hand loom cloths, furniture making etc.,

JCT, Phagwara
Textile unit of JCT - a flagship company of Thapar group - was incorporated in
the year 1946 at Phagwara and went into commercial production in the year 1951.
The Textile Division at Phagwara employs more than 700 workmen and gives
indirect employment to lacs of people. the textile division of JCT is the first
in the industry to be accredited with the ISO 9002 certification
Jagatjit Industries Ltd.
Jagatjit Industries Limited (JIL) was set up by Mr. L.P. Jaiswal in the year
1944 in
the erstwhile State of Kapurthala under the patronage of His Highness Sir
Jagatjit Singh, the then Maharaja of Kapurthala.
Jagatjit is one of the major players in the Alcoholic Beverages business in the
country with regular and premium brands like Aristocrat and Binnies.
Oswal Agro Mills Ltd
This Sugar Unit- formerly known as Jagatjit Sugar Mills Co. Ltd.- was set up in
1932with initial crushing capacity of 400 tones per day and is first crushing
season was started in 1932-33.
SSK Industries
SSK was founded in 1935 and is today India's oldest and most experienced in the
field of Electrical wiring accessories.
