Rail Coach Factory

Rail Coach Factory, the second Coach Factory owned by Indian Railways and third in the country was set up in 1986 at Kapurthala to boost the economy of the State and to augment the existing coach manufacturing capacity of Indian Railways.

Kapurthala, though among the smaller Districts of the Punjab, has a uniqueness of its own. Thanks to the vision and foresight of the late Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, in 1985, the first large scale public sector industrial enterprise, in the form of the Integral Rail Coach Factory, was established in the Punjab at Hussainpur, on the Jalandhar-Firozpur Northern Railway Line in Kapurthala District. An area of 335 acres was acquired for the factory and 843 acres for a small colony. Today, within a short span of 14 years since laying the of foundation of the Rail Coach Factory, the whole area of 4.76 Sq. Kms. has been turned into a paradise on earth. Setup with an investment of Rs. 400 Crores, RCF have turned out 10,000th coach on 22nd July,2000, thus, contributing to more than 30% of the total passenger coaches( Broad Gauge) in service of Indian Railways. About 23 types of coaches are being turned out every year. Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala has been awarded commendation certificate of "Golden Peacock Environment Management" Award-2000 by World Environment Foundation. RCF had already been awarded ISO-14001 certification for Environmental Management System for factory as well as colony premises by M/s. DET NORSKE VERITAS, Netherlands.

The establishment of this undertaking in this part of the Punjab, has greatly enhanced the available opportunity horizons and employment possibilities for the industrious Punjabi population. The Rail Coach Factory complex also boasts of a splendid eighteen hole golf course with proper "greens" and "golf links", structured from out of what was hitherto, a sandy wasteland.
